New ESU courses at EAU18

The European School of Urology (ESU) is well-known for bringing front-line, educational resources for professionals in urology. At the upcoming  EAU18 Congress in the Danish capital, the ESU will add three new comprehensive courses to the list of its successful courses.

ESU Course 07:
Prosthetic Surgery in Urology

Course Director: Mr. Asif Muneer (GB) of the University College London Hospitals

Course objectives
Surgical techniques through the aid of surgical videos will be the focus of this ESU course. Upon completion, participants will understand the role of biofilms and how to minimise the risks of prosthesis infection. They will also learn about theatre setups and preparation of the patient for prosthetic surgery.

The course will cover surgical techniques and surgical tips for male slings and artificial urinary sphincters. Participants will be introduced to prosthetic surgery in female urology (e.g. injectables, sacral neuromodulation, and female tapes). There is also a focus on penile prosthesis surgery including surgical techniques, managing intraoperative complications, and revision penile prosthesis surgery.

Target groups
This ESU Course is aimed at individuals with an interest in prosthetic surgery including trainees preparing for post-graduate FRCS(Urol)/FEBU (Fellow of the EBU) examinations; experienced urologists who wish to update their knowledge and skills; established prosthetic surgeons who would like to know more about revision surgery for complications and tips for avoiding intraoperative pitfalls.

ESU Course 07 is scheduled from 12:00 to 14:00 on Saturday, 17 March 2018. Save the date!

ESU Course 16:
Lymphadenectomy in urological malignancies

Course Director: Prof. Dr. Agostino Mattei (CH) of the Luzerner Kantonsspital

Course objectives:
In case of tumour surgery, a loco-regional lymph node (LND) dissection is also mostly indicated. But with the introduction of minimal invasive surgery, the LND has been practiced less extensively.

Session presentations will corroborate the indications when a LND has to be performed, the templates, the techniques using different approaches, the oncological as well as functional outcomes.

After attending this course, participants would :

  • Know the indication when to perform LND during surgery for urological malignancies.
  • Apply the most modern imaging concepts for the preoperative lymph node staging.
  • Have solid knowledge about the templates that have to be removed.
  • Be informed concerning the oncological and functional results of lymph node dissection as well as complications.

ESU Course 16 will take place from 14:30 to 17:30 on Saturday, 17 March 2018. Be sure to include it in your programme!

ESU Course 49:
How to optimize the everyday management of your patients

Course Director: Prof. Dr. Francesco Montorsi (IT) of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele

Course objectives
This course will critically review key papers published during the past 12 months devoted to the management of prostate cancer patients with a particular focus on diagnosis, staging, local treatments and systemic therapies. For every paper a clear take-home message applicable to the every-day clinical practice will be identified and discussed.

The selected key papers from the past 12 months covered the following topics:

  1. Prostate cancer screening and early detection
  2. Diagnosis with particular emphasis to mpMRI and fusion biopsies
  3. Staging and predictive models
  4. Results of curative-intent treatments with particular emphasis to radical prostatectomy, radiotherapy and focal therapy
  5. Management of biochemical and clinical recurrence after treatment with curative intent
  6. Systemic therapies in hormone-sensitive and castration-resistant disease

At the end of this course, participants will be informed about the latest and most significant novelties related to the contemporary management of prostate cancer patients in detail.

ESU Course 49 is scheduled from 14:30 to 17:30 on Monday, 19 March 2018. Mark your calendars!
